Newly.wed // 05
I’ve been eating year old cake for a week.
Which can only mean one thing…we made it through one year of being married!
Well, that, and the cake actually survived the year in the freezer without becoming freezer burnt. It might not be as soft and fluffy as I remember it being a year ago (and is probably the only thing I remember eating that day), but I’m still consuming it like it’s the lone sustenance on a desert island. In a week, when every bite has landed on my hips, I’ll hate myself for indulging in a slice with every meal and not exercising self-control.
But what’s even better than the cake…is being married to my husband. (Cue the collective awwwww. I know, that’s pretty cheesy).
A few months ago, I started a habit of practicing gratefulness once a week, which is really a fancy way of saying I sit in a comfy chair, attempt to be still, and try to think of all the things for which I am grateful. And every day that I do this, I find that it puts me in a wonderfully cheerful state of mind. In total honesty, the easiest way for me to get into gratefulness mode is to think about my husband and the life we’ve created together that is filled with love and laughs and joy and snuggles and happiness.
And as I sit and think about all the specific things that I have to be grateful for, this is what I would think to myself.
I am grateful for my husband because…
…he makes jokes about the things our cats would say if they were able to speak human.
…he helps with cooking dinner and cleaning – without being asked. This makes him the best roommate ever.
…he believes in winding down before falling asleep, and makes us tea to share together. This is our favorite nightly ritual.
…he loves Star Talk. He is a walking encyclopedia on all things space. I love that he has a passion that he enjoys just for himself.
…he doesn’t run and hide at the first sight of tears. Instead, he grabs a box of tissues and sits down to wait out the storm.
…he gives the best hugs.
…he is an easy-going, compassionate companion.
…he is the reason we can both follow our dreams.
…even though neither of us is perfect, I’m so incredibly grateful that I get to go through life with someone as sweet as him.
And because I like to look at it in it’s complete form, without any slices taken out, here’s a photos of said cake that is quickly disappearing…at least I can always look longingly at it…or just buy a new one every year. I’m all for option two.
Happy Anniversary to us…and happy Friday!

Anna, I’m so happy for you two! Happy Anniversary! That cake is gorgeous – I cannot believe it survived a year in the freezer! Did you make the cupcakes? The whole picture is very enticing (the kind of thing that pretty much makes me swoon since I love all things PARTY, esp. when they’re THAT gorgeous!!) I would love to meet that sweet hubby of yours one day. Open invitation to Greensboro!! Love you bunches!!!
